The importance of blood groups in matchmaking
There has been an ongoing debate over the importance of ABO matching for platelet transfusions for well over 50 years. This is a two-part blog post to help unpack the debate on ABO matching for platelets. Part 1 provides an overview of the ABO system as it applies to platelets, definitions of ABO platelet matching terminology, and common endpoints for studies looking at the impact of ABO matching on platelet transfusion. Part 2 is a literature review that details the results of an extensive review of the evidence surrounding the impact of ABO incompatibility for prophylactic transfusions to hematology-oncology patients. Ultimately, the conclusion from the literature review in Part 2 may come as a surprise to many, because we found that the evidence suggests there is a relatively small impact on clinical outcomes from platelet ABO incompatibility major mismatch , when compared to other product factors impacting transfusion success. It is well known that the appropriate matching of compatible ABO blood groups is critical for safe red blood cell transfusion.

The amount and part of the blood transfused depends on what the patient needs. A CBC measures the levels of components within the blood such as red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Tests of clotting coagulation may also be done if abnormal bleeding is a problem. If a transfusion is needed, it must be prescribed by a health care provider. At that point, more blood tests must be done to find a donated blood component that closely matches the patient.

The blood type personality theory is a pseudoscientific belief prevalent in Japan and South Korea, which states that a person's blood group system is predictive of a person's personality , temperament, and compatibility with others. One of the reasons Japan developed the blood type personality indicator theory was in reaction to a claim from German scientist Emil von Dungern, that Blood type B people were inferior. Although some medical hypotheses have been proposed in support of blood type personality theory, the scientific community generally dismisses blood type personality theories as superstition or pseudoscience because of lack of evidence or testable criteria. The idea that personality traits were inherited through the blood dates as far back as Aristotle.
Blood types are determined by the presence or absence of certain antigens — substances that can trigger an immune response if they are foreign to the body. Since some antigens can trigger a patient's immune system to attack the transfused blood, safe blood transfusions depend on careful blood typing and cross-matching. Do you know what blood type is safe for you if you need a transfusion?
